The Silmarillion

Chapter 19 “Of Beren and Lúthien” in The Silmarillion by J.R.R Tolkien will be adapted for a stage production. The designs combine historical 1570s silhouettes and fantasy clothing by using modern fabrics and textiles techniques.

Different dyeing techniques like ice dyeing, cyanotypes and eco-printing were implemented to create a more natural and organic feel to the costumes. The costume for Lúthien has been made with a combination of silk and satin; I also created a headpiece using a combination of silk and beads, placed around a wireframe that I made.

I drew inspiration from nature, especially leaves, and from ballet dancers for the characters Lúthien and Daeron and factored in the movement of ballet dance whilst I was designing and constructing the costumes.

Above are photographs from the photoshoot at Edinburgh University on the 1st of April 2025.
